I've stood at that front desk.
It was 4 p.m. Nearly a hundred calls in, and I still hadn't eaten. I asked my manager if I could break for lunch. He said no. Too many calls coming in, and stepping away would hurt my “productivity.” So I stayed at the desk, hungry, and kept picking up the phone.
That stuck with me. Not the lunch. What it meant: I was being treated like a machine. A practice does need its phones covered all day, sure. But people aren't machines. We get tired and hungry.
